About The Department of Economics
The Department of Economics was established in 1970, the same year the college was founded under the inspiration and guidance of Dr. Goverdhandas Parikh, the founding Chairman of the J.T.S.S.M.P. Mandal. A distinguished economist and former Rector of Bombay University, Dr. Parikh’s vision laid the foundation for promoting economic education as a core discipline of social relevance.
The department has a legacy of academic leadership, with the first Principal of the college, Dr. Kamlakar Parchure, belonging to this department. Over the years, the department has been strengthened under the leadership of dedicated faculty members, including Prof. S. V. Kabburi, who served as the former Head of the Department and significantly contributed to its academic growth. At present, the department is led by Assistant Professor S. N. Kasbe, who is committed to implementing NEP-oriented reforms such as experiential learning, skill-based training, and interdisciplinary project work.
In alignment with the multidisciplinary, multilingual education, inclusivity and holistic approach advocated by the National Education Policy 2020, the Department offers courses to students from both the Arts and Commerce faculties. For Arts students, Economics is available at both Major and Minor levels in Marathi language, while for Commerce students, it is taught in Marathi as well as English language at the Minor level .
The Department also encourages student-centric activities such as seminars, field visits, research surveys, and group discussions, in line with NEP’s thrust on critical thinking, communication skills, and ethical reasoning. These initiatives prepare students not just for academic excellence, but also for responsible citizenship and future employment opportunities.

Macroeconomics: This subject encompasses diverse sub-disciplines, each covering different aspects of economic activity. Narrowing down your research topic by assessing your interests and their relevance to current economic trends can provide focus. When choosing a topic, you might consider exploring options in economics research topics that can shape your perspective on broader economic principles.
Microeconomics: Microeconomics examines individual economic units, such as households, firms, and markets. Topics in this area often explore consumer behaviour, pricing strategies, market competition, and the impact of regulations on businesses.
Development Economics: This specialised branch deals with issues in developing economies, including poverty elimination, income inequality, and the role of international aid. It explores sustainable methods for economic growth in less-developed regions. To dive deeper into this area, consider economics research topics and economics writing help for in-depth studies.
Environmental Economics: In an era of heightened public concern for environmental issues, this field emphasises the economic impact of environmental policies, the valuation of natural resources, and the trade-offs between economic growth and environmental sustainability.
International Economics: Covering globalisation, trade, exchange rates, and economic interactions between nations, this branch also explores the role of international organisations like the IMF and World Bank.
Behavioural Economics: This relatively new field blends psychology with economics to understand how individuals make economic decisions. Research in this area might include irrational behaviour, cognitive biases, and the influence of social factors. Economics help online offers tools to dive deeper into this fascinating area, which continues to gain relevance.
Health Economics: Focusing on how a country’s health systems function, the distribution of health resources, and the economic impact of health policies, this field is central to economic well-being. Utilising economics research topics and seeking economics writing help can guide your research efforts in this area.
Labour Economics: Exploring employment, wages, labour markets, and the influencers on both supply and demand for labour, this branch includes the economic aspects of education and workforce development.
Banking & Finance : Research in banking encompasses the systematic investigation and analysis of the banking industry, its operations, and the broader financial landscape. This includes studying financial markets, consumer behaviour, and the impact of economic conditions on banking institutions. It involves using various methodologies and tools, such as quantitative analysis, market research, and economic modeling, to understand trends, identify risks, and inform decision-making within the banking sector.
Tourism Economics : Tourism Economics is defined as a field that integrates economic principles with the study of tourism to understand its impact, trends, and development.
Agricultural Economics : Agricultural Economics research focuses on the application of economic principles to agriculture and related areas. Key research areas include farm management, agribusiness, agricultural policy, rural development, and the economics of food and natural resources. These areas often intersect with issues of sustainability, climate change, and international trade.
Industrial Economics : Industrial Economics research focuses on the economic behaviour of firms and industries, analysing market structures, firm strategies, and the impact of government policies on industrial outcomes. It examines how industries evolve over time at both macro and micro levels, and how industry structure influences performance.
