About Department Of History

The subject of History was introduced at the general level in the academic year 1985–86, under the affiliation of Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. During this foundational phase, Prof. N.A. Rokade was appointed as the first Lecturer in History. Since 1995, Prof. Mahadeo Waghmare has served as the Head of the Department. He currently holds the position of Principal of the college. The department expanded its academic offerings by introducing History as a Special Subject in 2007, and subsequently launched the M.A. in History postgraduate program in the academic year 2012–13. The department is deeply committed to research-oriented education, skill-based learning, and a multidisciplinary approach that not only strengthens historical understanding but also enhances students’ employability and critical thinking abilities

In alignment with the transformative vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the department integrates flexible, student-centric learning pathways with interdisciplinary approaches, fostering 21st-century skills such as critical inquiry, cultural sensitivity, and civic responsibility. The curriculum emphasizes conceptual clarity, experiential learning, and local to global perspectives, which are crucial for shaping informed and responsible citizens through the study of History. In support of the NEP 2020’s emphasis on vocational and value-based education, the department has been successfully conducting a Certificate Course in Travel & Tourism since 2012–13. This course significantly contributes to students’ practical knowledge, career development, and readiness for opportunities in the fields of heritage tourism, historical research, and cultural management.
